Free Lorem Ipsum Generator

Generate placeholder text for testing QR code capacity, label layouts, and design mockups.

What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text that has been the industry standard since the 1500s when an unknown printer scrambled a passage from Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC). It's used as dummy text for layouts and designs because it has a natural distribution of letters, making it look like readable content without being distracting.

Why Use Lorem Ipsum?

  • Design focus — readers aren't distracted by meaningful text during design reviews
  • Realistic length — approximates real content for layout testing
  • QR code testing — generate text of specific lengths to test QR code data capacity
  • Label mockups — fill product labels and packaging designs with placeholder text

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lorem ipsum, and where does it come from?

It is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text, derived from a passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum written in 45 BC. The text has been mangled over centuries of reuse — lorem itself is a fragment of dolorem — which is the point: it looks like prose without being readable, so nobody reviewing a layout starts reading the copy instead of judging the design.

Why not just use real text, or repeat the same word?

Repeating one word gives an unnaturally even texture and hides line-break and hyphenation problems that real text would expose. Real copy has the opposite failure: reviewers engage with the content and stop seeing the layout, and draft copy in a mockup has a way of surviving into production. Lorem ipsum has roughly the word-length distribution of European prose without inviting either problem.

How much text fits in a QR code?

A QR code holds up to 2,953 bytes at the lowest error-correction level, which is roughly 2,900 characters of plain English, or about 400 to 500 words. But capacity is not the useful limit: a symbol carrying that much data needs 177 by 177 modules, and printing something that dense at a size a phone can actually read means a large label. In practice a code meant to be scanned from a phone should carry a fraction of the maximum. Our QR code capacity calculator gives the exact figure for a given length and error-correction level.

Why does my QR code get denser as I add text?

Because the symbol grows in discrete steps. There are 40 QR versions, from 21 by 21 modules up to 177 by 177, and adding one character past a threshold bumps you to the next version, adding four modules in each direction. Each module is then physically smaller at the same printed size, so the code needs better print quality and a closer scan. Trimming a URL by a few characters can drop a version and make a code measurably easier to read.

Should I use lorem ipsum to test a barcode or label layout?

For layout, yes — it is ideal for checking that text wraps sensibly and that a label does not overflow. For testing the code itself, no. Use content of the same character set and length as the real thing, because the encoding mode depends on which characters are present, and lorem ipsum's lowercase Latin forces byte mode where an uppercase alphanumeric payload would be substantially denser.

Does lorem ipsum actually mean anything?

Not as written. It is derived from real Latin but has been corrupted, truncated and reordered to the point of being nonsense, and words have been introduced that are not Latin at all. Individual fragments are recognisable to a Latinist, which occasionally causes amusement when placeholder text ships to production.

Is there a reason to prefer a different placeholder text?

Sometimes. Lorem ipsum has no accented characters, no question marks and no long words, so it will not reveal problems with diacritics, with right-to-left scripts, or with the German compound nouns that break narrow columns. If a design has to work in several languages, test it with text in those languages instead.

Is the text generated here unique?

It is assembled locally in your browser from a standard word pool, so two people asking for the same amount get similar but not identical output. Nothing is fetched from a server and nothing you generate is recorded.
