How QR Code Generation Works
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores data in a matrix of black and white squares. When you enter text or a URL, our generator encodes that information using the QR code standard (ISO/IEC 18004) and renders it as an image.
QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. They include built-in error correction, meaning they can still be read even if partially damaged or obscured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the QR codes I make here free to use commercially?
Yes. A QR code is just an encoding of your own data — there is no licence attached to the symbol and no per-scan fee. The QR Code patent held by Denso Wave has long been made freely available for use under the published ISO standard, so you can print codes generated here on packaging, signage or advertising without paying anyone.
Do the QR codes expire or stop working?
No. These are static codes: the destination is encoded directly into the pattern, so there is no redirect service that could shut down and nothing to keep paying for. Is my data sent to a server?
No. The generator runs entirely in your browser and draws the code onto a canvas element on your own device. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored, which matters when you are encoding an email address or phone number.
Why does it refuse very long content?
This generator covers QR versions 1 to 10, which tops out at a few hundred bytes. That comfortably fits URLs, contact details and short messages. If you need to encode more, shorten the URL or check the QR Code Capacity Calculator to see which version your content actually requires.
What size should I download for printing?
Pick the largest option and scale it in your layout software rather than enlarging a small PNG, which will look blurry. As a rule of thumb a printed code should be at least 2 cm across, and roughly one tenth of the distance people will scan it from. Our QR code size guide covers this in detail.
Can I change the colour of the QR code?
Yes, and there is one rule that matters: keep strong contrast between the code and its background, with the code darker than the background. Scanners look for that contrast, so light-on-dark or low-contrast colour pairs are the most common reason a nicely designed code will not scan.
