How does a WiFi QR code actually work?
It encodes a short text string in a documented format that begins with WIFI: and lists the security type, network name and password. Android and iOS both recognise that pattern and offer to join the network instead of showing the raw text, so the guest never types the password.
Does this work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both platforms support the WIFI: format natively from the camera app on current versions. On some older Android devices you may need to use the WiFi settings screen's built-in scanner rather than the camera app.
Which security type should I choose?
Choose WPA for any modern network — the same option covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3. Choose WEP only for genuinely old hardware, and No Password for an open network. Picking the wrong type is the usual reason a generated code fails to connect.
Is my WiFi password sent anywhere?
No. The code is generated entirely in your browser and your password is never uploaded, logged or stored. That is the whole point of doing this locally — you are encoding a live credential to your own network.
What if my password contains semicolons or backslashes?
It is handled. The format uses semicolons as field separators, so this tool automatically escapes backslashes, semicolons, commas, colons and quote characters before building the string. You do not need to change your password or escape anything yourself.
Should I use this for my hidden network?
Yes — tick the hidden network option so the flag is set in the code. Without it a phone may not find the network, because it will not be broadcasting its name. Note that hiding a network name is not a meaningful security measure on its own.
Is it safe to put this on a poster in a cafe or rental?
Anyone who can see the poster can join the network, exactly as if the password were printed on it — the QR code is not a secret. That is usually fine for a guest network, but do not use it for a network that also carries your own devices, payment terminals or file shares. Put guests on a separate guest SSID.
