Windows 11: Snipping Tool (No Webcam, No Download)
This is the fastest built-in route on modern Windows, and the one most guides still miss. Recent Snipping Tool builds detect QR codes inside a capture through the Text Actions panel — the same on-device feature that extracts text from an image — and surface the decoded link so you can open or copy it.
- Press
Win + Shift + Sto open the capture bar. - Drag a box around the QR code. Include a small margin of blank space on all four sides — that margin is the code's "quiet zone" and decoders need it.
- Click the notification that appears to open the capture in Snipping Tool's markup canvas.
- Select Text Actions in the toolbar. QR code detection runs automatically as part of this step.
- Read the decoded link before you act on it. Copy it rather than clicking straight through, then check the domain (see the safety section below).
Two caveats worth knowing. First, this depends on your Snipping Tool version rather than your Windows build number, so if you do not see Text Actions, update the Snipping Tool from the Microsoft Store. Second, QR detection in Snipping Tool is a Windows 11 feature — Windows 10 users should skip to the Chrome method below.
Any Windows or Mac: Google Lens Inside Chrome
This is the most universally available desktop method, works on Windows 10, and handles codes in webpages, saved images and rendered PDFs alike.
- Open the image or page containing the code in Chrome. For a saved file, drag it onto a blank Chrome tab.
- Right-click the QR code and choose Search with Google Lens. On some builds this opens a selection overlay instead — drag a box around the code.
- The decoded content appears in the side panel, usually as a clickable link or copyable text.
Microsoft Edge offers the same capability through its own visual search. The important difference from a browser-based "online QR scanner" website is that Lens is part of a browser you already trust rather than an unknown third party — which matters more than it sounds, as the next section explains.
macOS: Screenshot Plus Live Text
Apple never shipped a standalone desktop QR reader, but Live Text does the job on any Mac running a recent macOS.

Cmd + Shift + 4and drag around the code — again, leave a margin of white space. - Open the resulting screenshot in Preview or Quick Look (select the file on the Desktop and press Space).

Scanning QR Codes Inside PDFs, Invoices and Slide Decks
This is the single most common desktop scenario and it has one non-obvious gotcha: do not zoom in too far before you capture. Blowing a vector QR code up to 400% then screenshotting it produces a huge, soft image that some decoders handle worse than the original. Zoom to roughly 100–150%, capture the code with its white margin intact, and decode that.

The Method to Be Careful With: Random Online QR Scanner Sites
Search results for this topic are full of "upload your QR code here" websites. They work, and for a poster code you photographed yourself the risk is low. But consider what you are actually doing: uploading an image — often from a financial document, a ticket, a login flow, or a payment request — to a server you know nothing about, which then learns both the image and the decoded destination.
Two rules make this safe enough:
